July’s Business of the Month

The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce and its Business of the Month Committee are pleased to award the July Business of the Month to Chugach Industries, Inc.

Chugach Industries, Inc. (CII), a subsidiary of Anchorage-based Chugach Alaska Corporation, is located on NAS Whidbey here in Oak Harbor. Chugach has been the Base Operating Support contractor at NASWI since 1996 and they are proud to employ over one hundred local residents at this site.

Chugach Alaska Corporation is one of thirteen Alaska Native regional corporations formed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971 and has contracts all over the US and the world. Performing maintenance and support for military bases is one of the main contractual efforts in which Chugach has been successful. Their local plumbers, carpenters and skilled tradesmen employed by CII do a fine job to keep the Seaplane base and Air station operating smoothly. Their staff handles operations and maintenance services as well as special projects such as the recent PBY transfer and supporting the two aircrafts placed on Ault Field road.

Oak Harbor’s island atmosphere, beauty and cleanliness have made for very loyal residents here on Whidbey. Several of Chugach employees originally based in Alaska have found the local community to be a welcome change from the traffic and hustle of the city of Anchorage.  The many local artisans, free community transit system and abundance of outdoor activities make our community stand out in the Pacific Northwest.  They think most local residents and especially those involved in the Chamber of Commerce appreciate this and act to maintain and promote our community’s assets.

Chugach, having been an employer here for 14 years, is an active participant in local community philanthropic efforts. They annually support the Relay for Life campaign, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Help House, the Festival of Trees and community schools.  “Chugach Industries, Inc. is a proud member of the Oak Harbor Chamber and getting together to meet with local businesses and employers, as well as, staying abreast of local activities is something we look forward to monthly” said Jerry Recker.  Thank you for the opportunity to represent Chugach and be recognized as the Business of the Month.  Jerry said “We thank the integrity of our employees as our greatest strength. “
