April Business of the Month Walmart

The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce and its Business of the Month Committee are pleased to award the April Business of the Month to WalMart.

WalMart was originally founded in 1962 and is the largest discount retailer in the county. WalMart opened its doors in Oak Harbor in January 1999 at the Bayview Shopping Center. They currently employ over 200 associates with over 90% living in Oak Harbor. Rich Mueller said “people stay put here,” and Sam Walton, founder of WalMart said “Our people make the difference,” Rich added “that is especially true here in Oak Harbor.” Rich shared how they love the people in the community and “our customers are the BEST!!!” “The residents of Oak Harbor are friendly, helpful and very outgoing” said Rich.
WalMart’s founder, Sam Walton’s original goal was to save people money to help them live better. Today, this mission is more important than ever to both their customers and members.
WalMart is big on community involvement and shows that through a variety of ways. One of those ways is having a Relay for Life team. Others include volunteering at WAIF, running food drives, coaching youth sports, sponsoring blood drives, helping teach children to read and have taught people how to save lives. The associates at WalMart donate over 2,000 hours of their time per year. Another way WalMart is involved in the community is through their grant program, which puts a little over $20,000 back in the community through the Community Grant Program and the Local Charitable Grant Program offered through WalMart.
Rich said “it is a privilege being an Oak Harbor Chamber member and being part of a team dedicated to the betterment of our community through the strengthening of local business.”
